Royalty and mining businesses lead the Canadian screen
Pizza Pizza Royalty leads with a 77.25% trailing free-cash-flow margin, followed by PrairieSky at 69.28%, Labrador Iron Ore Royalty at 62.12%, Freehold Royalties at 58.64%, China Gold International at 52.58% and Cipher Pharmaceuticals at 52.50%. The high royalty margins reflect royalty income rather than the sales of underlying restaurant or mine operators.
The original lists were expanded with a broader Canadian universe spanning large-, mid- and small-cap companies. Ten higher-margin candidates replace ten original names after web statement checks, duplicate and stale-listing removal, and a C$300 million capitalization threshold. The updated selection contains 20 small caps, 22 mid caps and 28 large caps; it is not a complete market-wide census.

The 70-company free-cash-flow screen
Companies are ranked from highest to lowest trailing free-cash-flow-to-sales margin. Swipe or scroll horizontally to view every column.
YTD performance uses adjusted Canadian-listed prices from December 31, 2025 to October 30, 2026. Five-year performance uses October 29, 2021 to October 30, 2026. N/A indicates insufficient comparable trading history. Returns are cumulative and follow the API’s adjustment conventions, with web history used when needed.
Regular dividend yield uses qualifying cash distributions paid during the trailing twelve months through October 30, 2026, divided by the October 30 unadjusted CAD close. China Gold’s special dividend component, Amerigo’s discretionary performance dividends, Groupe Dynamite’s C$2.30 special distribution and Lundin Gold’s dividend-in-kind are excluded. Recurring variable quarterly cash dividends remain included.
FCF/Sales = (reported operating cash flow − cash PP&E/real-estate investment − separately classified productive intangible/software/royalty purchases) / reported revenue where supplied. Business combinations and financial investments are excluded. Statements use each issuer’s latest complete matched trailing period available when checked on October 31, 2026. Productive asset purchases are included even when a company’s own adjusted FCF definition excludes them: Topaz’s C$321.22M CFO less C$129.39M cash investment gives C$191.83M FCF on C$376.07M reported revenue, or 51.01%. DRI Healthcare’s US$121.42M CFO less US$0.99M PP&E and US$83.50M royalty/intangible investment gives 17.66% on US$209.15M reported income. These are methodology differences from the original screens, not unexplained changes in operating cash flow.
EBIT/Interest uses trailing operating income divided by gross interest expense where separately available. ‡ identifies broader reported finance costs used when a distinct interest line is unavailable: Aya’s TTM expensed financing costs are US$9.223M; Lundin Gold’s small US$0.052M reported finance charge produces an unusually high multiple and is not a measure of the cost of all its stream obligations. ~ identifies a proxy: Kinaxis uses trailing cash interest; Shopify and Cronos use recognized lease liabilities multiplied by disclosed lease discount rates. Operating-lease estimates are economic financing-cost proxies, not separately reported GAAP interest. N/A is reserved for verified absence of borrowing/lease debt and interest. IFRS interest-payment classification can affect reported operating cash flow; no uniform reclassification of cash interest or lease principal is imposed. P/E is trailing, not forward; N/M means non-positive trailing earnings. Cap values are CAD billions. Ratios use each issuer’s reporting currency without mixing currencies. Property and fleet-financing businesses require additional comparability checks.
Royalties and capital requirements shape cash conversion
Pizza Pizza Royalty, PrairieSky, Labrador Iron Ore Royalty, Freehold, Topaz, Franco-Nevada and Altius generate royalties or infrastructure-linked income with different reinvestment requirements from mine operators. China Gold, Lundin Gold, DPM Metals and IAMGOLD remain sensitive to metal prices, production, taxes and project spending.
Cash investment in acquired royalty rights can be substantial even for asset-light businesses. The screen deducts productive asset investment consistently and distinguishes it from business combinations; company-defined adjusted FCF may therefore differ from the ratio shown here.
Financing and lease obligations require context
Gross interest expense is preferable to net finance income for coverage analysis. Aya’s issuer statements supply expensed long-term financing costs even though the standardized income statement does not show a separate interest line. Lundin Gold reports a very small finance charge, so its resulting multiple should be read with the stream-obligation caveat below the table.
Kinaxis cash interest and the Shopify and Cronos lease-cost estimates are marked as proxies. A large cash balance does not eliminate gross borrowing or lease costs, and current debt-based estimates do not reconstruct actual historical accruals.
Regular dividends provide a cleaner income comparison
Meren Energy, Pizza Pizza Royalty, Diversified Royalty, Lundin Gold, Enghouse Systems and Labrador Iron Ore Royalty feature among the higher regular trailing cash yields in this universe. Companies without qualifying recurring cash payments are shown at zero.
Identifiable special and irregular payments are excluded. Variable recurring cash dividends can still fluctuate substantially, particularly in mining, energy and royalty businesses, so trailing yield is not a forecast of future distributions.
Valuation and company structure require context
P/E and capitalization appear in separate columns. The P/E ratios are based on trailing earnings and can be distorted by nonrecurring gains, impairment charges or acquisition accounting. N/M avoids presenting a meaningful positive valuation multiple where trailing earnings are non-positive.
The expanded screen removes conventional banks, insurers, asset managers, REITs, preferred shares, duplicate share classes and stale listings. Property investment, fleet financing and royalty purchases can still make retained companies such as StorageVault and Element Fleet less comparable with software or conventional operating businesses.
Cash-flow quality matters more than a single ratio
Free cash flow can be influenced by working-capital timing, acquisition accounting, capitalized development, stock-based compensation and cyclical pricing. A high current margin should be reconciled with the cash-flow statement and compared across several periods.
The strongest candidates are not simply those with the highest percentage. They are businesses able to sustain cash generation, fund necessary investment and allocate the remaining cash without weakening their competitive position.
