Clorox Faces Margin Pressure and Integration Costs as Shares Lag Benchmark

The Clorox Company (NASDAQ: CLX) posted a 5% decline in FY 2026 net sales and a 26% drop in GAAP diluted EPS, leaving the stock down 26.9% over the past year while the S&P 500 benchmark rose roughly 4.4%, creating an under‑performance gap of more than 10 percentage points.

Full‑year net sales fell to $6.720 bn versus $7.104 bn in FY 2025, a ‑5% YoY decline. Q4 FY 2026 revenue slipped to $1.948 bn (‑2% YoY). GAAP diluted EPS fell to $4.81 from $6.52 a year earlier (‑26%), while adjusted EPS dropped ‑42%. Gross margin in Q4 contracted to 41.3%, down 520 bps YoY.

Inflation and ERP Transition Drive Margin Compression

Clorox warned that 2026 inflationary pressures would exceed $200 million, roughly double its historical range, as energy, commodity and supplier costs surged. The company also completed a multi‑year ERP rollout in FY 2026, which forced an inventory drawdown that reduced sales by an estimated 7.5 percentage points and shaved about $0.90 from EPS.

GOJO Acquisition Adds Growth but Raises Costs

The April 1 acquisition of GOJO Industries (Purell) boosted the Health & Wellness segment to $860 m (+16% YoY), partially offsetting steep declines in Household (‑18%) and Lifestyle (‑17%) segments. Integration expenses added $0.36 per share to FY 2026 EPS.

Analyst Sentiment Turns Cautious

JPMorgan downgraded Clorox to Underweight on April 17, citing weaker category growth and rising diesel and resin costs. The rating was reiterated on July 16. Jefferies moved the stock to Hold on July 28, while Wells Fargo kept an Equal‑Weight stance on September 11 but cut its price target to $90 (down from $102). Citigroup’s September outlook listed 12 Hold and 5 Sell recommendations, underscoring a broadly pessimistic view.

Macro and Competitive Landscape

Persistent inflation, supply‑chain volatility and a value‑seeking consumer base have limited Clorox’s pricing power. The company faces intense competition from national brands and private‑label products, with Walmart accounting for roughly 27% of FY 2025 sales. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as potential U.S. tariffs, add further uncertainty to raw‑material costs.

Risks and Unanswered Questions

Key risks include continued input‑cost inflation, the pace of cost‑saving realization from the ERP transition, and the ability to extract sustainable earnings from the GOJO acquisition. Retail concentration, especially the reliance on Walmart, could amplify any adverse pricing or promotional pressures. A further decline in household‑care sales or a slowdown in consumer spending would deepen margin compression.

Investor Watchlist

Margin pressure

Higher input costs and ERP‑related inventory drawdown could keep gross margin below 42%.

Demand outlook

Consumer price sensitivity may curb growth in household and lifestyle categories.

Integration risk

Realizing synergies from the GOJO acquisition will be critical to offsetting cost headwinds.
